How to Teach Empathy to Kids

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It’s a crucial skill for building strong, healthy relationships and fostering kindness and compassion.

Teaching empathy to kids from an early age helps them develop emotional intelligence, improves their social interactions, and encourages a more inclusive and understanding world. That’s why we’ve come up with some fun and effective ways to help nurture empathy in your children or class. Give a couple of them a try and we’re sure you’ll notice a difference!

1. Model Empathetic Behaviour

Kids learn by watching us. Show empathy in your daily interactions and talk about your feelings and actions with your child. When you express understanding and concern for others, explain why you’re doing it. This helps kids see empathy in action and understand its importance.

2. Encourage Perspective-Taking

Help your child understand others’ feelings by discussing different scenarios and asking how they would feel in similar situations. Use phrases like, “How do you think they feel?” or “What do you think they might be thinking?” to prompt your child to consider perspectives different from their own.

3. Read Stories Together

Books and stories are excellent tools for exploring emotions and different perspectives. Choose stories with diverse characters and situations. After reading, discuss the characters’ feelings and actions. Ask questions like, “Why do you think the character did that?” and “How would you feel in their situation?”

We use characters in this way within each of our Kids Yoga Adventures so that kids can empathise with the challenges they face. As well as building empathy, this helps kids to recognise and understand the challenges when they themselves are faced with them.

4. Practice Active Listening

Teach your child to listen attentively and respond thoughtfully. This can be practised during family conversations or with friends. Emphasise the importance of eye contact, nodding, and repeating back what they’ve heard to show they understand. This helps children feel heard and valued, reinforcing empathetic communication.

5. Use Role-Playing Games

Role-playing different scenarios can help children understand others’ emotions and reactions. It’s a fun and interactive way to develop empathy. Create scenarios based on real-life situations or use characters from their favourite stories. Discuss how different characters might feel and why they might act a certain way.

6. Watch a Cosmic Kids Yoga Adventure

At Cosmic Kids, we love using stories and movement to teach important life skills like empathy. To making finding these episodes easy, you can filter our Yoga Adventures by ‘benefit’ (including empathy!), over on our app.

Here are some of our favourites for teaching empathy:

Goldilocks and the Three Bears: In this retelling, we focus on understanding others’ boundaries and feelings. Kids learn about respect and the consequences of their actions through Goldilocks’ experience. Yoga poses that accompany the story help kids embody the characters and their feelings, enhancing their empathetic understanding.

Mr. Biggles the Monster: This story about a misunderstood monster helps kids see beyond appearances and understand that everyone has feelings. It teaches compassion and the importance of getting to know someone before making judgments. The yoga movements in this adventure help children connect with the emotions of Mr. Biggles, fostering a deeper sense of empathy.

Suki and Scott the Socks: This adventure involves a pair of socks who are siblings that don’t always match, but they soon learn to appreciate their differences and learn to love one another. It’s a fun way to teach kids about acceptance and valuing their siblings. Through yoga poses and storytelling, kids can experience the journey of Suki and Scott, understanding their feelings and celebrating their uniqueness.

Beauty and the Beast: This timeless tale highlights looking beyond outer appearances and finding the beauty within. It emphasises understanding and kindness toward others, even when they seem different. Yoga poses that align with the story help kids physically and emotionally engage with the characters’ experiences, deepening their empathetic skills.

To really drive home the empathy messages in these Yoga Adventures, it’s a great idea to discuss the story afterward to reinforce the lessons learned. These adventures help children understand different characters’ perspectives and emotions in a fun and engaging way.

8. Encourage Empathetic Actions

Create opportunities for your child to practise empathy, such as helping a friend in need, sharing, or volunteering. Discuss the impact of their actions on others and praise empathetic behaviour. Real-life experiences of helping and kindness reinforce the value of empathy and make it a natural part of their behaviour.

9. Discuss Real-Life Situations

Talk about real-life examples of empathy, whether it’s from personal experiences or news stories. Discuss the impact of empathetic actions and how they made a difference. This helps children see the real-world importance of empathy and encourages them to act with kindness in their daily lives.

10. Create a Safe Emotional Environment

Ensure your home is a place where feelings are respected and discussed openly. This helps children feel secure in expressing their emotions and understanding others’. Encourage open conversations about feelings and model respectful responses to emotions. This nurtures an environment where empathy can flourish.

Teaching empathy to kids is essential for their social and emotional growth. By incorporating these strategies and utilising resources like Cosmic Kids Yoga Adventures and Zen Den episodes, you can help your child develop a deep sense of empathy and kindness towards others. Empathy is a skill that can be nurtured and developed, leading to more compassionate and understanding future generations.
