Bedtime can be a funny old time. All day, children have been running, learning, chatting, playing, asking questions, making things, losing things, finding things, feeling feelings…it’s really all going on!
Then suddenly we say: right, that’s it. Bedtime. Time to be still – so it’s no wonder it doesn’t always go smoothly!
For lots of children, bedtime isn’t just “the end of the day.” It’s a big gear change. They have to move from noise to quiet, from play to rest, from being with everyone to settling down, from doing to simply being. And that’s a lot to ask!
This is where bedtime yoga for kids can be lovely.
Not as another thing to get through, or as a perfect routine you have to perform every night. Just as a gentle way to help children ease into bedtime – and maybe even look forward to it!
What is bedtime yoga for kids, and why is it good for them?
If you’ve done any of our (Cosmic Kids!) yoga before, then you’ll know that we love a big, brilliant Yoga Adventure. We go to jungles, oceans, castles, planets, quests and magical lands. We move, imagine, balance, stretch, laugh and play.
But bedtime yoga is different. It has a different job. A daytime Yoga Adventure helps children step into a story, whereas a bedtime yoga episode helps them step out of the day.
That’s why we’ve made a specific Bedtime Yoga series of episodes. Each is a slower, gentler form of children’s yoga designed to help children wind down before sleep.
Instead of big movements, fast-paced adventures or exciting missions, bedtime yoga uses soft stretches, calming breathing, sleepy stories and relaxation to help children move from busy mode into cosy mode.
Bedtime yoga can help children:
- release leftover wriggles from the day
- slow their breathing
- settle busy thoughts
- build a predictable bedtime rhythm
- feel safe, calm and ready for rest
- enjoy one last gentle activity before sleep
Why bedtime routines matter
Sleep is a big deal for children.
It’s when their bodies grow, their brains process what they’ve learned, and their minds get a chance to reset for another busy day.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that children aged 3–5 get 10–13 hours of sleep, children aged 6–12 get 9–12 hours, and teenagers get 8–10 hours in every 24-hour period. These recommendations are linked with attention, behaviour, learning, emotional regulation, physical health and overall wellbeing.
Of course, knowing children need sleep and getting them happily into bed are two very different things!
That’s where having a routine helps.
Of course, the exact routine will look different in every home, but the rhythm really does matter. Research on children’s bedtime routines has found that consistent routines are linked with better sleep outcomes and can support wider family wellbeing too.
And that makes sense, doesn’t it?
Children often feel safer when they know what’s coming next and their bodies start to understand the pattern.
“Oh. We’re doing the sleepy bit now.” Lovely!
So what makes the Cosmic Kids ‘Bedtime Yoga’ series different?
A regular Cosmic Kids Yoga Adventure tends to require a bit more energy from both kids minds and bodies. There might be big movements, exciting moments, funny characters, quick changes, brave missions and brilliant bursts of imagination.
They are wonderful episodes (if we do say so ourselves!), but probably not what you want right before lights out.
Instead, with our Bedtime Yoga episodes, everything is turned down a notch. They are made to be that little bit slower and calmer, with more gentle poses and a nice, sleepy story theme.
Choose the right Cosmic Kids bedtime moment
The Cosmic Kids app now has a whole Bedtime Hub, so you can choose the kind of wind-down your child needs that night.
Some nights, they may need a little movement.
Some nights, they may need a story.
Some nights, they may need an audio storybook without a screen.
Some nights, they may need one last adventure before bed.
The lovely thing is that you don’t need to use everything every night. Just choose the thing that fits the moment!
Bedtime Yoga
Choose Bedtime Yoga when your child needs slow, gentle movement to help them settle. These episodes are slower paced and bedtime-themed, with softer movements and a calmer rhythm.
One Last Adventure
Choose One Last Adventure when your child still wants the magic of a Yoga Adventure, but you want something that feels suitable for the end of the day. It’s a lovely final adventure before the cosy bit begins.
Audio-only Peace Outs
Choose Peace Out guided relaxations when screens are off and your child is already tucked up. These audio-only relaxations are perfect for listening, breathing, imagining and resting.
Bedtime Stories
Choose Bedtime Stories when your child wants a story without more visual stimulation. A familiar voice and a gentle story can be a beautiful final step in the routine.
Which Cosmic Kids bedtime option should I choose?
| If your child… | Try… |
| Still has wriggles | Bedtime Yoga |
| Wants one more activity before bed | One Last Adventure |
| Is already tucked up | Audio-only Peace Out |
| Needs a calm story without screen time | Bedtime Stories |
| Is worried or full of thoughts | Peace Out or Bedtime Yoga |
| Needs a whole bedtime routine | The Bedtime Hub |
And remember, you can mix and match depending on the night! This isn’t about doing bedtime perfectly. It’s about having a few gentle tools ready when you need them.
A note on screens before bed
Lots of parents are understandably careful about screens before bed.
That’s sensible. The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended healthy family media habits such as keeping screens out of bedrooms, putting devices away before bedtime, and using media intentionally rather than letting it run on in the background.
So the way you use Cosmic Kids at bedtime matters.
A bedtime yoga episode is best used as a deliberate wind-down choice – not as endless scrolling, autoplay, or “just one more” video that turns into six.
You might use the video earlier in the routine, then switch to audio-only Peace Outs or bedtime stories once your child is tucked up.
That way, Cosmic Kids becomes part of the bedtime rhythm, not something that keeps the day going.

FAQs about bedtime yoga for kids
Is yoga good before bed for kids?
Yes, gentle yoga can be a lovely part of a child’s bedtime routine. The key is choosing slow, calming yoga rather than energetic movement. Bedtime yoga uses soft stretches, breathing and relaxation to help children settle.
It’s not about tiring children out.
It’s about helping them wind down.
How long should bedtime yoga be?
It doesn’t need to be long. Five to fifteen minutes is often enough, especially for younger children.
The aim is not to create a huge extra task at bedtime. It’s simply to give children a calm little bridge between the day and sleep.
Is Cosmic Kids bedtime yoga different from regular Cosmic Kids Yoga Adventures?
Yes. Regular Cosmic Kids Yoga Adventures can be more energetic, playful and story-led. They’re brilliant for daytime movement, brain breaks and active fun.
Cosmic Kids bedtime yoga episodes are slower, softer and more sleep-friendly. They are designed to help children move from busy mode into cosy mode.
What should I do if my child still won’t sleep?
That’s normal sometimes.
Bedtime yoga is not a magic sleep button. It simply helps create the conditions for rest: a calmer body, a quieter mind, and a predictable routine.
If sleep difficulties are ongoing, severe, or affecting your child’s daytime wellbeing, it’s always worth speaking with a healthcare professional.
